Mayoral and Balmain Ward candidate Darcy Byrne and Leichhardt Ward candidate Lucille McKenna have today announced Labor’s plan to make parking dramatically fairer and cheaper in the former Leichhardt Council area.
If elected to the Inner West Council, Local Labor Councillors will extend 30 minute free parking to every parking meter, turn meters off after dark and reduce the number of parking rangers patrolling the streets.
Labor will also put a ban on new parking meters in the Inner West.
Darcy Byrne said that having delivered 30 minute free parking on main streets as Mayor of Leichhardt it is now time to go further and spread free parking into all side street meters.
“Extending 30 minutes free parking to every meter will send a message to local residents and visitors that they can park affordably anywhere they go in our neighbourhoods,” Byrne said.
“The Council should not have its hand in people’s pocket every time they stop to get bread and milk. We are going to make sure that residents aren’t punished for supporting local businesses.
“Local people tell me they are sick of worrying about being fined. A penalty notice is often the straw that breaks the camel’s back and forces people to stop shopping locally.”
“We are listening to what the people want – we’ll expand 30 minute free parking, turn the meters off at night and take rangers off the street.”
Former Ashfield Mayor and Leichhardt Ward candidate Lucille McKenna said turning meters off after 7:00pm could help revitalise Leichhardt, Rozelle and Balmain as dining precincts.
“This will be a boost for restaurants in Norton Street and Darling Street, ensuring that patrons do not have to worry about getting back to their cars because their parking time has expired,” McKenna said.
“We are determined to support local businesses and committing to no new parking meters in the Inner West local government area is an important first step.”
LOCAL LABOR’S PLAN FOR A FAIRER PARKING SYSTEM
Local Labor Councillors will:
1. Extend 30 minutes free parking from main streets to all meters in side streets, making every meter 30 minutes free.
2. Turn parking meters off after 7:00pm.
3. Ban any new parking meters in the Inner West Council area.
4. Permanently reduce the number of parking rangers by transferring them into other roles.
5. Quarantine revenue raised from parking meters and fines in the former Leichhardt Municipality for infrastructure spending in that area.
